Propane storage follows the Idaho Fire Code and NFPA 58. LP-gas containers may not be used in basements, pits, or similar low areas where heavier-than-air gas can collect. Only small DOT cylinders (2.5 lb water capacity or less) may be stored inside buildings accessible to the public, up to 200
Idaho adopts the Idaho Fire Code and NFPA 58 (the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) for propane storage and handling. Section 6103.2.1.1 prohibits using LP-gas containers in a basement, pit, or similar location where heavier-than-air gas might collect. Section 6109.9 limits indoor storage in public-accessible buildings to DOT cylinders with a maximum water capacity of 2.5 pounds, not to exceed 200 pounds of LP-gas total. Larger backyard tanks must meet NFPA 58 setbacks from buildings and property lines. Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 53 licenses LP-gas dealers and installers. In unincorporated Ada County, the fire code official enforces these standards.
Storing propane indoors, in basements, or beyond code limits can bring fire-code correction orders and denial of occupancy or insurance until abated.
