Boise follows the International Fire Code as adopted statewide under Idaho Code Β§41-253, limiting residential propane storage to small portable cylinders unless permitted as a stationary tank, with setback requirements from buildings, ignition sources, and property lines enforced by Boise Fire's prevention division.
Idaho adopts the IFC by reference and the State Fire Marshal supports local enforcement. Residential propane cylinders up to 100 pounds may be stored outdoors with minimum setbacks of five feet from buildings and openings; larger stationary tanks of 125 to 1,000 gallons require permits, distance separations from buildings and lot lines per IFC Chapter 61, and listed installation. Indoor storage is severely restricted and grilling propane must remain outdoors. Boise Fire conducts plan review for new tank installations including refilled-on-site residential supplies. Tanks must be protected from vehicle impact and properly grounded against ignition sources during refill operations.
Improper storage citations carry fines and require correction; failure to permit a stationary tank can trigger removal orders and fire-code abatement at owner expense.
