Medford, OR Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

The Oregon Fire Code lets each city set its own 'limits' under Section 6104.2, the boundary inside which bulk storage of liquefied petroleum gas is restricted rather than freely allowed. Medford's Section 7.023(23) sets that boundary as broad as it can go: the limits established under 6104.2 'include all properties within this jurisdiction,' so there is no part of Medford outside the restricted zone, and any bulk LP-gas storage anywhere in the city must meet the code's restricted-area conditions. This sits alongside Medford's other bulk-fuel limits in the same section: 7.023(22) caps flammable and combustible liquid bulk plants and terminals at no more than three operating in the city at once, and 7.023(18) and (19) separately prohibit Type 1 or Type 2 magazine explosives storage and ban explosives or fireworks storage anywhere in the city unless the Fire Chief or designee approves it.

Property owners, contractors, or fuel distributors who want to install bulk LP-gas storage must work through the fire code official's permitting and inspection process established in Section 7.023(3), including any after-hours inspection fee set in the city's fee schedule. Because the restriction is citywide rather than limited to industrial zones, any bulk LP-gas installation, whether at a residence, farm, or business, is subject to the same fire code review.
