Novi, MI Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 15-17 amends Fire Code Section 6104, Location of LP-gas containers, by adding subsection 6104.2, which states that the capacity limitations protecting heavily populated or congested areas apply to all properties in the city except where disclosed and permitted by an approved site plan on land zoned I-2, Heavy Industrial, under the City of Novi Zoning Ordinance. That means a residential or ordinary commercial property must stay within the standard International Fire Code capacity limits for LP-gas containers, since Novi did not loosen the base rule for anything but approved heavy-industrial sites.

The same site-plan/I-2 test appears elsewhere in Section 15-17's amendments: storage of flammable cryogenic fluids in stationary containers is likewise prohibited outside an approved I-2 site plan under amended Section 5504.3.1.1.3, and above-ground storage of Class I and Class II flammable liquids is barred outside I-2 site-plan approval under Sections 5704.2.9.6.1 and 5706.2.4.3. The City Fire Marshal, not the zoning board, is the official empowered to determine under these sections whether a proposed storage use is otherwise allowed under the state Fire Prevention Code. These fire code amendments were adopted under Ord. No. 15-99.16 in 2015 and further amended by Ord. No. 16-99.17 and Ord. No. 19-99.18.
