Novi, MI Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Chapter 33, Division 2's commercial-parking rule targets weight, not vehicle type. § 33-616 defines a commercial vehicle broadly as any motor vehicle used to transport passengers for hire, or built or used to carry goods, wares or merchandise, including a vehicle designed to draw other vehicles, so the rule reaches pickup trucks with commercial plates as much as box trucks. Section 33-617 then prohibits parking, or a registered owner permitting the parking of, any commercial vehicle over five thousand pounds on a residential street or on residentially zoned property in Novi, for any purpose or length of time, unless one of two narrow exceptions applies: the vehicle is there only for the expeditious unloading and delivery, or pickup and loading, of materials, goods or merchandise, or it's on the property to carry on a principal use the Zoning Ordinance (Appendix A) allows there, such as a contractor's own truck at a home where that use is permitted.

The rule reaches property owners directly: § 33-617's second sentence separately bars the owner of residentially zoned property from permitting a violating vehicle to remain there, so a homeowner can be cited for letting someone else's truck sit on their lot. Section 33-618 gives enforcement a shortcut: displaying a commercial license plate is prima facie proof the vehicle is a commercial vehicle, and the weight shown on the vehicle's registration is prima facie proof of its weight, so officers don't need to put the truck on a scale to write the citation.
