Ridgewood, NJ Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Village of Ridgewood Code § 190-124M covers exterior mechanical equipment and tanks, expressly naming propane tanks and oil tanks alongside air-conditioning units, heat exchangers, compressors, generators and condensers. Installing any such equipment first requires a zoning permit under § 190-124M(1). The equipment must comply with the minimum required front-yard setback that applies to principal buildings on the lot, or an established nonconforming front-yard setback, and must be screened from the view of adjacent properties and streets; that screening duty does not apply to window-mounted units like fans or window air conditioners, which is not relevant to a ground-set propane tank.

Section 190-124M(3) adds a separate residential-specific rule: the equipment must sit back at least 10 feet from any residential property line. Equipment placed on a roof instead falls under the separate roof-equipment standard in § 190-124P, and replacement of existing equipment already in a nonconforming location is allowed as long as neither the footprint nor the height grows by more than 10% and screening is kept up. Separately, the Village's construction-fee schedule at § 125-3 sets a $125 permit fee specifically for liquefied petroleum gas tank installations, a plumbing subcode fee under the Uniform Construction Code.
