Wylie, TX Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Wylie adopted the 2021 International Fire Code (IFC), with Appendices B, C, D, K, L and N, through Sec. 46-41, and then locally amended specific IFC sections through Sec. 46-42, using the North Central Texas Council of Governments' regional amendment package as its Option B jurisdiction. Among those local amendments, IFC Section 6104.2 as amended into Sec. 46-42 caps the aggregate water capacity of any single liquefied petroleum gas (LP-gas, propane) installation at 2,000 gallons within the limits established by law restricting LP-gas storage for the protection of heavily populated or congested areas, specifically in residential districts.

That means a homeowner's or property manager's residential propane tanks, whether serving a single tank or several tied to one installation, cannot together exceed 2,000 gallons of water capacity. The same amendment package also addresses above-ground flammable-liquid storage: IFC Section 5706.2.4.4, amended in the same article, prohibits storing Class I and II liquids in above-ground tanks within the limits established by law as residential districts. Fire code violations as adopted and amended in Chapter 46 are enforced by the Wylie fire marshal or the fire code official, who administers permitting under Section 105.6 of the amended IFC and can require compliance before issuing occupancy or construction approvals.

The general Code penalty in Sec. 1-13 applies to fire-code violations at up to $2,000.00 per offense, reflecting the higher tier the Code reserves for fire, safety, health and sanitation violations.
