Lafayette, IN Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Lafayette Municipal Code Chapter 3.02 sets the smoke detector rules enforced citywide by the Fire Prevention Division. Section 3.02.030 requires all dwelling units in the City of Lafayette to have a minimum of one functional, properly located, labeled and listed smoke detector as described in N.F.P.A. Standard No. 72 and in accordance with State and Local Building Code. Section 3.02.020 requires each detector to meet ANSI/UL 268 or ANSI/UL 217 safety standards. Installation follows manufacturer specifications under Section 3.02.040: absent manufacturer guidance, ceiling mounting at least four inches from the wall, or wall mounting between four and twelve inches below the ceiling, and placement on the high side of any room with a ceiling slope greater than one foot in eight feet horizontally.

Section 3.02.050 governs power supply, allowing AC or battery power for most residential units, with detectors required by 675 IAC 13 or 675 IAC 14 following those state rules. Section 3.02.060 makes it unlawful to tamper with or remove a smoke detector except for maintenance or inspection, and any detector removed for repair or remodeling must be reinstalled or replaced so it stays operable. Section 3.02.070 puts the compliance burden for rental dwelling units on the owner, manager, or rental agent, who must install required detectors and repair or replace a failed unit within two business days of written notice; tenants must inspect and test detectors monthly per the manufacturer's instructions. Any violation of Chapter 3.02 for which no specific penalty is stated is punishable under Section 3.02.990.
