Lafayette, IN Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 7.06.110(B), inside Chapter 7.06 Stopping, Standing and Parking, targets big trucks parked in Lafayette's residential districts. It is unlawful for the owner, operator or driver of any commercial vehicle or truck with more than two axles, including the truck-tractor of a semi-trailer, to park or stand it on a residential street or alley for longer than four hours. The four-hour cap does not apply to household or other moving and delivery trucks actually loading or unloading at an adjacent residence, or to service trucks and workers on a service call at an adjacent residence.

Subsection C defines a "commercial vehicle" broadly, as any vehicle designed, maintained or used primarily to transport property, while expressly excluding municipal and government vehicles, public utility vehicles, vehicles delivering services, authorized emergency vehicles, and vehicles that merely carry political stickers, signs or advertisements. The same section separately caps overnight parking of these trucks in § 7.06.110(A). Violations of § 7.06.110(B) fall under the Chapter 7.06 catch-all penalty in § 7.06.990(A)(8): a $50.00 fine for each violation, escalating to $100.00 after thirty days unpaid and $150.00 after sixty days, with a right to appeal to Parking Operations within fourteen days of the citation.
