Lafayette, IN Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 7.06.160, in Chapter 7.06 Stopping, Standing and Parking, is Lafayette's yard-parking ban. It makes it unlawful to operate, park or store any vehicle on any portion of a residential lot other than a drive or other parking area authorized under the Unified Zoning Code, and it separately bars driving a vehicle over any part of a residential lot that is not a drive or an authorized parking area, even briefly, to reach a parking spot elsewhere on the property. The rule reaches cars, trucks, campers, trailers, boats and any other vehicle kept in a residential yard, and it applies regardless of whether the surface is grass, gravel or another unpaved material, since the only authorized surface is a drive or parking area recognized by the zoning code.

The section was last amended by Ord. No. 2013-39, § 8, adopted December 2, 2013, and again referenced by Ord. No. 2022-11, § 6, adopted June 6, 2022. Because § 7.06.160 states no penalty of its own, a violation is punished under the Chapter 7.06 catch-all fine in § 7.06.990(A)(8): $50.00 for each violation, rising to $100.00 if unpaid after thirty days and $150.00 if unpaid after sixty days, with payment made at a location the Parking Commission designates.
