Lafayette, IN Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 7.06.130(A), in Chapter 7.06 Stopping, Standing and Parking, lists sixteen specific places where no one may stop, stand or park a vehicle in Lafayette, except when necessary to avoid a traffic conflict or to comply with a police officer's direction or a traffic-control device. The list bars parking on a sidewalk or between the sidewalk and curb, within five feet on either side of a public or private driveway, within an intersection, on a crosswalk, within ten feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, and within fifteen feet of a fire hydrant.

Other paragraphs in the same list bar parking within thirty feet of a flashing beacon or stop sign, on a bridge, in a highway tunnel, on a traffic island, and, under paragraph 16, in a marked bicycle lane or multi-use path except for a service or delivery vehicle actively working there. Subsection B exempts emergency vehicles of the Fire Department, Police, Sheriff, EMS and other government departments actually engaged in authorized work, and vehicles stopped in a traffic line under an official signal or an officer's order.

Fire-hydrant and fire-lane violations carry a specific $50.00 fine under § 7.06.990(A)(2); most other paragraph 1 violations fall under the general $50.00 fine in § 7.06.990(A)(8), which escalates to $100.00 after thirty days unpaid and $150.00 after sixty days.
