Lafayette, IN Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Lafayette Municipal Code § 7.06.290, "Loading and unloading of trucks," bans angle and perpendicular parking of trucks for loading or unloading at all times. Commercial vehicles, defined in § 7.06.110, may load or unload in a marked zone or alley for up to 30 minutes per stop. A truck of any size can also load from a position parked parallel to the curb outside a prohibited or loading zone, but it is bound by the same time limit as ordinary parking there unless it holds a permit under § 7.06.240.

No truck may load or unload in a way that impedes the free flow of traffic. Downtown, the Parking Commission must reserve a loading zone within one block of any business that lacks an alley or off-street loading and where on-street parking is not generally available. Where a commercial vehicle downtown cannot fit a designated zone or alley, double parking is allowed only within limits: 20 minutes for loading or unloading, flashers on the whole time, and after dark, orange triangles or cones placed around the vehicle.

A business with a special loading problem can apply to the Police Department for a special permit. Enforcement runs through the Ordinance Violations Bureau: because § 7.06.290 sets no penalty of its own, a violation defaults to the Chapter 7.06 catch-all fine in § 7.06.990(A)(8), fifty dollars, which climbs to $100 after 30 days unpaid and $150 after 60 days under § 7.06.990(B)(2).
