Lafayette, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 13.02.040(A) makes it unlawful to wire any building in the City of Lafayette for the transmission of electric current before the person doing the work obtains a permit. The written application goes to the City Engineer on the city's forms and must state the site of the building, the lot number, the addition name if applicable, the street name, and the intended use of the premises, per Section 13.02.040(B); a copy of the plans and specifications for the wiring must also be submitted before the permit can issue, under Section 13.02.040(C).

The filing fee is $50.00 for a single-family or duplex residential electric-only permit and $200.00 for multifamily residential, commercial, or industrial work, per Section 13.02.040(D). All electrical work must conform to the Indiana Electrical Code, the 1984 edition of the National Electrical Code as adopted and amended by the state at 675 IAC Article 17, under Section 13.02.010. The City Electrician serves as the city's Electric Inspector under Section 13.02.020, and the Inspector has the right to enter any building or manhole at any time to test electrical apparatus, on application to the owner or person in charge, under Section 13.02.030.

Anyone doing electrical work who is not already bonded to the city must also post a bond, separate from the concrete, plumbing, and general contractor bond amounts set in Section 13.01.060(C).
