Pocatello, ID Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Chapter 15.12, the city's fire prevention and safety chapter enforced by the Pocatello Fire Department, layers this smoke alarm mandate on top of whatever the International Fire Code already requires for new and existing buildings. Section 15.12.040 requires smoke alarms in all dwelling units and, separately, in the common areas of residential group occupancies, meaning apartment corridors and shared spaces need coverage in addition to individual units. The alarms cannot be generic: the code requires listed single or multiple station devices that comply with UL 217, the Underwriters Laboratories smoke alarm standard, installed according to NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.

That combination controls placement and installation expectations beyond a bare battery-powered unit screwed to a hallway ceiling. The only carve-out in the text is for buildings with no more than two dwelling units, so a duplex is exempt from this section's mandate even though the underlying International Fire Code provisions for new and existing buildings still apply. Triplexes, fourplexes, and larger residential group occupancies get no such exception and must meet both the unit-level and common-area requirements. Because the section sits inside the fire prevention chapter rather than the adopted building code chapters, compliance is checked alongside the chapter's other fire department duties, which include fire apparatus access, aboveground storage tanks, and LPG handling.
