South Fulton's Code has no standalone residential smoke-alarm ordinance, but Sec. 13-3001 adopts the latest International Fire Code (as adopted by Georgia DCA), which carries smoke-alarm requirements. The only code mention of smoke detectors is for extended-stay lodging (Sec. 5-8004). Georgia state law also mandates residential smoke detectors.
The City of South Fulton does not have a separate residential smoke-alarm ordinance; a code search shows 'smoke detector' appears only in Sec. 5-8004 (Provisions applicable to extended stay hotels) and the fire title (Title 13) does not contain a dedicated residential alarm section. Instead, Title 13, Chapter 3, Sec. 13-3001 ('Adoption of International Fire Code; Revisions') provides that the city adopts 'the latest edition of the International Fire Code referenced in O.C.G.A. 8-2-20(9)(B), as adopted and amended from time to time by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs,' incorporating it as fully as if set out at length. The International Fire Code and the companion International Residential Code (Georgia's adopted construction codes) require working smoke alarms in dwellings - inside each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. Georgia state law (O.C.G.A. 25-2-40) separately requires at least one approved smoke detector in every dwelling unit. South Fulton's adopted-by-reference framework means enforcement tracks the current Georgia-amended IFC/IRC rather than a city-specific count or placement standard. Residents and landlords should follow the adopted code's placement rules and the city's Fire Rescue/Fire Marshal guidance.
Because South Fulton enforces the adopted International Fire Code under Sec. 13-3001, missing or non-working smoke alarms are addressed through fire-code inspection and correction notices rather than a separate local fine schedule. The fire marshal's office enforces the adopted code; extended-stay lodging additionally must meet the smoke-detector terms of Sec. 5-8004.
