Vineland, NJ Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

City Code Section 372-10, enforced by the Vineland Fire Prevention Bureau as the local agency for the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, requires the owner of any one- or two-family dwelling to obtain a certificate of smoke detector compliance before any sale, lease or other change of residential occupancy. The Bureau charges $50 per inspection when a completed application arrives at least 10 working days before the change of occupancy, rising to $100 for applications submitted less than 10 working days ahead and $175 for applications filed less than four working days ahead; a reinspection at the same location after the initial visit costs $35.

Fees double for two-family dwellings. With the Fire Official's prior approval, the Bureau may accept a notarized affidavit that smoke detectors are installed, tested and operational in lieu of an inspection, for a $35 certification fee. A seller or seller's agent who completes a resale without the required certificate is fined $250, payable to the Fire Prevention Bureau. Separately, Section 609-1 of the Smoke Detectors chapter directs that smoke detectors in new construction be installed according to the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and maintained under the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, tying the City's own installation standard to the state technical codes it administers locally.

Applications and fees for both the compliance certificate and the underlying fire code inspections are processed by the Fire Prevention Bureau, which also handles related certificates of fire code status for $25.
