West Des Moines, IA Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

West Des Moines layers two separate smoke-alarm mandates depending on the type of building. For rental housing, section 8-2A-16(T) is direct: smoke detectors are required in every bedroom and on every floor of the dwelling, with further requirements set by the State of Iowa Administrative Code. Compliance with that detector mandate is also one of the named factors the Building Division weighs under section 8-2A-16(E) when deciding whether to move a rental's next inspection earlier or later than the standard two-year cycle. On the fire-code side, section 4-3-4 amends International Fire Code section 907.2.11 for the buildings it covers.

Rather than leaving smoke alarms as simple stand-alone units, the amendment requires listed single- and multiple-station smoke alarms that comply with UL 217 and the household fire warning provisions of NFPA 72, and it requires those alarms in dwelling units to be addressable with sounder bases and monitored by the building's fire alarm system as a supervisory signal. The code's own note limits that heightened standard to Group R-1, R-2, and R-4 occupancies (apartment buildings, condominiums, non-transient boarding houses, dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and monasteries) and Group I-1 occupancies, so it layers on top of, rather than replaces, the bedroom-and-floor rule that applies to ordinary rental dwellings.

Every fire alarm system the amended Fire Code requires must also be monitored by a UL-listed monitoring station, and each building's alpha-numeric address descriptor must be reported to the West Des Moines Fire Department dispatch center when the system activates.
