Vestavia Hills, AL Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Sidewalk & Mobile Vending (2026)

Section 8-272(c) of the Vestavia Hills Code of Ordinances states flatly that all mobile food units must be located off the public rights-of-way, which under the city's traffic and streets provisions includes sidewalks as well as street pavement and shoulders. Combined with section 8-272(e), which requires the operator to hold written, on-demand approval from the property owner for every site where the unit sets up, the practical effect is that food trucks in Vestavia Hills operate exclusively on private lots such as shopping center parking areas, office parking lots or business frontages, never at the curb, on a public sidewalk, or in a street parking space.

Section 8-272(l) reinforces the same setback logic at ground level, requiring the unit to sit at least five feet away from any fire hydrant, sidewalk, utility box, handicap ramp or building entrance even once it is parked on qualifying private property, and section 8-272(o) bars any obstruction of fire lanes, vehicle accessways or pedestrian walkways. A vendor who parks a truck on a public sidewalk or in the right-of-way to sell food is violating section 8-272(c) regardless of whether the business license and operating permit required under section 8-272(a) and (b) are otherwise current.
