Vestavia Hills, AL Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

2 of the Zoning Ordinance makes the permit requirement absolute: no fence in Vestavia Hills can be erected, installed, constructed or structurally altered except in strict compliance with the ordinance. 3 spells out the process. Anyone wanting to build a fence must first obtain a fence permit from the City, unless the fence was already approved as part of a valid Building Permit; work cannot start before the permit issues. Before the City approves that permit, both the Building Official and the Fire Marshal have to sign off on the plans and specifications for the fence or wall.

The applicant's submission must include a map or survey of the lot where the fence will sit, the fence's location on the property, its dimensions including height, width and length, an estimated cost, and a list and description of the materials to be used. The Fire Marshal's review matters most where a gated or security fence could block emergency access; for the one-acre front-yard security fence option, the ordinance separately requires a Knox switch and a gate width the Fire Marshal approves before the City will issue that permit. Skipping the permit step is treated the same as any other unpermitted zoning work in the city.
