Vestavia Hills Zoning Ordinance Β§4.5 (Fences) requires all fences in residential districts to be set back behind the front building line. Fences between the building line and front setback must be open and ornamental (no chain link or privacy wood). Security fences in front yards require lots with 100+ ft from lot line to house.
In all residential zoning districts, fences must be set back behind the front building line or behind the minimum front yard setback of an abutting residential property, whichever is greater. Between the building line and front setback, only open ornamental fences finished on both sides are permitted β chain link and privacy wood fencing are excluded. Security fences in front yards require lots where the principal structure is at least 100 feet from the front lot line, and must be stone, masonry, or metal, set 2 ft inside the lot line or 5 ft from public improvements.
Non-compliant fence: written notice, 30-day correction. $100 per day after deadline.
