Vestavia Hills, AL Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

1. As a general matter, off-street parking areas must be arranged so vehicles approach the street in forward motion, but the ordinance carves out an exception for detached single-family dwellings and duplexes: those properties may substitute a ribbon-type driveway or an unpaved all-weather surface for a solid-paved surface, built to standards the City Engineer adopts, and vehicles there may enter or leave the street either forward or backing. That exception does not extend to a shared driveway serving more than one residence unless the City Engineer approves the arrangement in writing.

1 requires that any driveway crossing an existing sidewalk be paved from the edge of the street pavement to at least ten feet back from the sidewalk regardless of whether the rest of the driveway is required to be paved, and a ribbon-type driveway must be solid-paved for that same stretch, from the back of the sidewalk to the edge of pavement. 4 gives the City Engineer authority to require pavement markings and traffic signage for parking areas other than those serving single-family homes and duplexes.
