Chicago restricts where food trucks can operate through the 200-foot restaurant buffer rule, ward-level restrictions, and designated vending zones. Specific locations may be designated or restricted by aldermanic action.
Under MCC 4-8-037, food trucks face location restrictions beyond the 200-foot restaurant buffer. Aldermen may designate or restrict food truck vending in their wards. Certain high-traffic areas, parks, and special event locations have specific rules. Food trucks cannot block pedestrian or vehicular traffic, fire hydrants, bus stops, or crosswalks. Non-motorized food carts have separate permitting requirements and designated locations. Special event vendor permits are available for festivals and markets, with single-day permit fees of at least $20. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection oversees permitting. Some areas of downtown and the Loop have specific food truck zones.
Vending in restricted locations carries fines of $500 to $2,000. Blocking traffic or emergency access may result in towing and additional citations.
