Oak Park, IL Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Vending Zones (2026)

O of the Oak Park Village Code, part of Article 24 governing foods and food establishments, draws the map for where a mobile food vendor may set up inside Village limits. The baseline rule is a 250 foot buffer: an operator cannot park and sell within 250 feet of a brick and mortar establishment already selling the same category of food or drink, so a taco truck cannot camp outside an existing taqueria and a coffee cart cannot set up beside an existing coffee shop.

The Village imposes a second, tighter restriction inside the Greater Downtown Oak Park Area, as defined by the Village: operators are not able to operate there at all unless they go through the permit process in the same section, a special event permit for public space or a temporary use permit for private property. Outside the downtown carve out, a vendor that clears the 250 foot buffer may vend on private property elsewhere in the Village, subject to the two hour per business district time limit that applies Village wide.

Cook County has no role in siting mobile food vendors inside Oak Park; this is a Village of Oak Park rule enforced through the Village's own ticketing, not a County health rule, and it is separate from the off code Zoning Ordinance that governs where fixed brick and mortar restaurants may locate. The section has been amended repeatedly since its original 1985 adoption, most recently in 2025, reflecting the Village's ongoing effort to balance food truck access against protecting existing storefront restaurants from being undercut a few doors down.
