Beaumont, CA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Section 5.08.110 defines a patio, garage or yard sale as a sale held at a private residence by the owner, tenant or occupant, and says the section exists to define the limits of such sales. Subsection A allows no more than two sales per calendar year at any residential address, each for a period not to exceed five consecutive days. Subsection B requires a license for every sale and bars the City from issuing more than two per calendar year. The license is valid only for a stated residential address and for no longer than five consecutive days. Subsection C says the City issues the license on payment of the license fee and that the license states the beginning and ending dates of the sale.

The fee sits in the business license rate schedule at Section 5.20.080, which lists patio, garage or yard sales at $5.00 per sale. Section 5.20.030 lets the City amend title fees by resolution, so the current amount is set by resolution. Under Section 5.12.030 the City Clerk and/or City Treasurer issues the license on application and payment, and the license names the licensee, the period covered and the location.

Three carve-outs sit in the same section. Subsection D lets the City issue an estate sale for a deceased occupant's personal property to the decedent's personal representative, with a duration of a reasonable length of time as determined by the City rather than the five-day figure. Subsection E says nothing in the section prevents sales held by recognized charitable or social organizations headquartered inside the City. Subsection F makes all goods proposed for sale subject to inspection by any peace officer of the City.

General licensing rules also apply. Section 5.04.100 bars any license where the location is not in the proper zone, Section 5.04.070 makes a license non-transferable, and Section 5.04.120 requires it to be posted at the address where the business is operated.
