Beaumont, CA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 17.11.080 of the Beaumont Municipal Code splits fence material rules into subsection A, fencing materials, and subsection B, prohibited materials. Both are enforced through the Community Development Director in the City of Beaumont, California.

Subsection A sets material standards by zone. Solid fences in multiple family residential, commercial and manufacturing zones must be masonry or other permanent materials approved by the Community Development Director. Open work fences facing any public street in commercial zones must be masonry or metal grill work such as wrought iron. In other situations an open work fence can also be open metal mesh or another appropriate material the Director accepts. For single-family residential zones, the code does not list an approved set: fencing materials for residential development there are subject to the Director's approval. The text adds that materials must be compatible with and complement conditions in the subject area, with consistency in architectural characteristics, other fencing in the vicinity and materials, and that decorative masonry and other materials are to be used wherever practical and appropriate.

Subsection B is the prohibition. In no case can barbed or other similar type wire be used as any part of a fence, except where the Director approves it for use in agricultural or manufacturing zones. Where it is permitted, barbed or similar wire cannot be placed so it is visible from any facing public street. Subsection A repeats the point: barbed wire fences are permitted only in agricultural and manufacturing zones and only when specifically approved. The section names barbed and similar wire as the prohibited material, so a homeowner in a residential zone has no route to it. Fences built before the ordinance that fail these rules must be removed, altered or replaced under the abatement schedule in § 17.11.080(C).
