Berwyn, IL Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Berwyn Code of Ordinances § 1244.05(B)(3) sets three zoning limits. A garage or yard sale is limited to a period of two consecutive days. A maximum of two garage and/or yard sales is allowed for the same residence within a 12-month period. Sales can be held between the months of March and October only. Table 1244.05-A marks Garage or Yard Sale as "P" in the four residential districts (R-1 through R-2, R-3, and R-4), so no temporary use permit is needed for the zoning side.

A separate license rule sits in Chapter 823. Section 823.01 forbids any garage, attic, basement, or house sale without first obtaining a license from the City Hall front desk receptionist and/or Clerk's Office. Under § 823.02(C) and (J), only two sales can be conducted by the same applicant or from the same premises during a season, and the season runs May 1 through October 31. Because the license season is the narrower window, it is the one that decides the first possible date each year.

The license comes with more conditions. Sales run 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over no more than two consecutive days, with no outdoor loudspeakers. Only the applicant's or household's personal property can be sold. Items and sales activity stay out of the front yard area and off public sidewalks and parkways, unless the owners of 50% of the residences on both sides of the street in a block request a joint sale. Advertising signs go in the front yard, plus two parkway signs, one per corner parkway, displayed 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on sale days only.

Section 823.03 charges nothing for the first license and $20 for the second license in the May 1 to October 31 season. Licenses are nontransferable, and rain does not cancel or reissue them.
