Gretna, LA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Sec. 46-71, adopted by Ord. No. 4731 in 2016 and last amended by Ord. No. 5001 in March 2024, governs garage sales, estate sales, yard sales and rummage sales of personal or family secondhand goods held in residentially zoned areas of Gretna. Subsection (a) sets the frequency cap directly: no person shall conduct more than two garage sales during any 12-month period. A permit is required for every sale, obtained at city hall or the code enforcement office after an application and a $25.00 fee, and the permit must be prominently displayed at the sale location for the entire time of the sale and during preparation. A parallel rule in subsection (b) caps nonprofit organizations at two bazaars, yard sales or rummage sales in any 12-month period, held only on property the nonprofit owns, rents or leases, under the same $25.00 permit process.

Subsection (c) layers on conduct rules for any permitted sale. Only personal or family items may be sold, since the stated purpose is letting residents dispose of unnecessary or unneeded items, not resell purchased inventory. A sale runs Saturday and/or Sunday only, starting no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and ending by 5:00 p.m., and cannot extend past one consecutive Saturday-Sunday weekend, though a properly permitted estate sale is allowed to run longer. Signs advertising the sale cannot be placed on public property, including utility poles, which are separately regulated under Chapter 58, Article IV.

The article does not spell out a stand-alone fine for exceeding the two-sale cap or skipping the permit, so a violation of Sec. 46-71 falls to the citywide Sec. 1-8 general penalty: a fine of up to $500.00, with notice given under Sec. 2-1.
