Gretna, LA Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Sec. 52-223, adopted by Ordinance No. 3234 in 1998 and renumbered under Ordinance No. 4564 in 2014, defines a 'residential parking permit zone' as a residential district where curbside parking on public highways is limited to no more than two consecutive hours. Subsection (b) makes the enforcement mechanic explicit: no one may park in such a zone for more than two consecutive hours unless the vehicle has been properly registered with the city as belonging to a resident of the zone and properly displays a parking permit authorized under this division of the Code.

Subsection (c) carves out one exception: whenever on-street paid parking is in effect inside part of a residential parking permit zone, those paid spaces are excepted from the two-hour and permit requirements entirely, so a metered space inside a residential zone runs on the paid-parking rules of § 52-213 rather than the permit rules of § 52-223. The Code does not spell out the registration process or the permit fee within this section; both are administered through the city's parking administrator referenced elsewhere in Article II.

Because the two-hour cap is tied to the vehicle, not the driver, a visitor who lacks a resident permit is limited to two consecutive hours in the zone regardless of how many times they move a short distance and return, read together with the enforcement pattern used elsewhere in this article.
