Gretna, LA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Before pouring or building a driveway in the City of Gretna, the property owner must file a notice of intention at city hall under Sec. 50-1. That notice has to give the address where the driveway is proposed, the municipal number, the lot and square number, the boundaries of the block or square, and the kind of materials that will be used in the structure. City staff have five days from the filing date to notify the owner whether the proposal is satisfactory, and that review looks at the location of the street, how developed the surrounding area is, the size of the opening cut into the curb, and the type of drain the crossing requires.

The section itself sets the hard width caps: no more than 16 feet across for a single driveway and no more than 28 feet across for a double driveway. The code defines 'width' for this purpose as the space the driveway occupies across the front or side of the abutting property, so the limit is measured at the property line, not at the garage or the street. Sec. 50-1 traces back to Code 1979 § 20-1 and Code 1997 § 86-1, and it sits in Chapter 50 alongside the city's other public-right-of-way rules, including the ban on street and median signage in Sec.

50-2 and the excavation-repair duty in Sec. 50-4 that applies once a driveway cut breaks the surface of the street or sidewalk. There is no exception in the text for commercial driveways or for unpaved surfaces; the 16-foot/28-foot caps and the city-hall notice apply to any driveway construction covered by the section.
