Lynwood, CA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Under Lynwood Municipal Code § 4-8.9, anyone who wants to sell used personal property to the public in a residential zone, whether called a garage, yard, patio, rummage or estate sale, must first obtain a special permit from the license collector. The applicant submits a form giving their name and address, the sale address, proposed dates and hours, a description of the property, and a signed declaration under penalty of perjury that the goods belong to the applicant or family and were not acquired for resale, and that the sheriff's department or code enforcement may inspect the merchandise.

A nonrefundable application fee set by city council resolution applies, though applicants 65 or older are exempt from the fee. Sales may run only during the one designated weekend of April, August or December, Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; items must be off public view by 7:00 p.m. An adult must be present throughout, only two signs are allowed on the sale property, no off-site signs may be posted on rights-of-way, poles, utilities or median islands, and display is confined to a 10-foot by 20-foot area with no sidewalk or parkway use.

Only used property of the permittee or family may be sold, limited to three of any large like item, and new merchandise or small-business activity is prohibited. The license collector, code enforcement division and sheriff's department enforce the section, and the permit or a copy must be posted at the sale. The date is not rescheduled for bad weather and fees are not refunded.
