Bossier Parish, LA Historic Preservation: Historic-Cultural Monuments (2026)

Chapter 62, Historic Preservation, opens with Bossier Parish Code § 62-1, the parish's ordinance directly designating cultural or historical landmarks. The police jury declares 77 specifically named rural cemeteries throughout the unincorporated parish as historical sites, listing each one by name, nearby community, the road it sits on, and its township, range, and section under the federal Public Land Survey System, for example Aiken Cemetery northwest of Rocky Mount on Aiken Cemetery Road in Section 2, T21N, R13W, and Bryan Cemetery east of Benton on Sirman Circle in Section 13, T20N, R13W.

The list runs alphabetically from Aiken Cemetery through Wyche Cemetery near Plain Dealing, with Stonewall Cemetery off Goathill Road added last by a later amendment. The section was built up in three ordinances, No. 3547 in 1998, No. 3606 in 1999, and No. S. 8:1 et seq. Unlike a landmark designation with its own review board, § 62-1 does not attach a separate permitting process or Board of Adjustment role to these sites in the parish code; the designation itself is the historic-site status, and any development affecting a designated cemetery would still run through the applicable state cemetery statutes and the parish's normal building and zoning review.
