Bossier Parish, LA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Bossier Parish bans loud vehicle noise in two overlapping ways. Section 46-36(a)(7) declares it a violation to discharge exhaust from any motor-driven vehicle or motorboat engine except through a muffler or other device that effectively prevents loud noise, alongside the same requirement for stationary engines and process vents. Section 46-36(f) then sets the muffler rule specifically for motor vehicles and motorcycles on the parish's traffic ways: no one may operate, or cause to be operated, a motor vehicle or motorcycle that isn't equipped with a muffler or sound-dissipative device in good working order and constant operation, and no one may remove or disable a muffler except for maintenance, repair or replacement.

Vehicles on public traffic ways are otherwise exempt from the Table 1 decibel limits in section 46-35, but only if their horns, mufflers and sound-dissipative devices meet those two conditions; a vehicle running without a working muffler loses that exemption. Section 46-36(g) separately bars repairing, rebuilding, modifying or testing any motor vehicle, motorcycle or motorboat in a way that pushes it over the section 46-35 limits. The enumerated-acts list also flags horns sounded for more than five consecutive seconds, except when reasonably necessary for safe operation, and vehicles so out of repair or overloaded that they create loud grating, grinding or rattling noise.
