Canton, OH Holiday Decorations: Lawn Ornament Rules (2026)

Canton Codified Ordinances Section 1187.06, Signs Exempt From Permit Requirements, lists the categories of signage the City's Planning Department allows without a zoning sign permit and without counting them toward the type, number or area of permanent signs allowed in a district. Subsection (m) covers holiday decorations associated with any generally recognized national, local or religious holiday. It sits among a short list of similar carve-outs: official traffic and government signs, address signs capped at 3 square feet in residential districts and 5 square feet elsewhere, flagpoles limited to 30 feet in height and three flags per lot, memorial or historical plaques up to 3 square feet, and temporary signs under the chapter's separate temporary-sign rules.

Unlike the ninety-day cap the City places on temporary residential holiday lighting under Section 1185.01(d), Section 1187.06(m) sets no explicit duration limit on holiday yard decorations themselves. A display that is genuinely tied to a holiday and functions as a decoration rather than as commercial advertising falls under this exemption; anything erected on the property still needs the underlying property owner's permission under subsection (n) of the same section, since signs placed without an owner's permission are separately prohibited under Section 1187.05. The exemption was adopted by Ordinance 164-2020, passed September 14, 2020.
