Canton, OH Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Canton Codified Ordinances Section 1134.02(b)(2) prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and similar sharp-edged material in every zoning district except I-1 and I-2. Even there, a topping strand is only legal if it doesn't exceed 12 inches, is angled 45 degrees inward and away from adjoining property, sidewalks, or the right-of-way, and sits between 7 feet and the fence's maximum permitted height off the ground. Electrified or electric fences are banned in all zoning districts, though invisible or radio-controlled pet-containment fences are exempt. Chicken wire fencing is prohibited except when used for animal-resistant garden enclosures, and fences built from scrap materials, refuse, pallets, cattle fencing, or anything not generally considered permanent fencing material are barred outright.

Snow fencing gets a seasonal carve-out: it's only allowed from November 1 through March 31 to control drifting snow, and it can't double as a general-purpose fence outside that window or for any other use. Fences citywide must also use traditional materials such as wrought iron, chain link, pressure-treated lumber, cedar, redwood, PVC, or vinyl, built from weather-resistant stock, and may not carry graffiti, unpermitted advertising, or lettering other than house numbers up to four inches tall.
