Canton, OH Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Chapter 1505, Fire Protection Systems, sets Canton's local smoke-detector mandate for buildings that were not already required to have detectors, alarms or extinguishers when built. Under § 1505.03, any existing building with an occupant load over twenty must have an automatic fire alarm system plus a single station smoke detector placed to warn occupants in each guest room, suite or sleeping area, with an additional detector in any basement or cellar; the Fire Prevention Bureau approves the manner and location. Section 1505.04 applies the same detector requirement, without the fire-alarm-system mandate, to existing buildings with an occupant load of more than five and up to twenty.

Section 1505.05 covers existing multi-family dwellings with more than three units, seventy-five feet or less in height: each dwelling unit needs at least one single station smoke detector installed as the Canton Fire Prevention Bureau approves, again with a basement or cellar detector where applicable. Detectors in these buildings can be battery powered if the owner or agent inspects the battery at least every six months; if the Bureau finds a battery unit inoperable or poorly maintained, it can order a switch to AC-powered, noncord-connected detectors meeting National Fire Protection Association standards.

Section 1505.06 separately requires fire extinguishers in the same buildings and multi-family dwellings, in numbers and locations the Bureau sets. Newly required systems must be installed within ninety days of the Bureau's inspection under § 1505.07. Where the Ohio Basic Building Code sets a higher standard, that code controls instead.
