Canton, OH Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Canton Codified Ordinances Section 1134.05(a) bars anyone from storing or parking a motor vehicle, as defined in Ohio R.C. 4501.01 and 4505.01, in a front, side, or rear yard unless the area is a constructed permanent driveway or an adjacent parking apron surfaced in blacktop, concrete, gravel, pavers, or a similar material. That surface must also match the uniform, consistent materials already used elsewhere on the property's parking areas, unless the Planning and Zoning Director or a designee approves mixed materials. Every permanent driveway or parking apron addition must first clear Site Plan Committee Review before construction, and substrate must be secured so gravel or loose material doesn't spill onto the right-of-way, neighboring lots, or unpaved ground.

The rule reaches beyond driveways too: Section 1134.05 separately bars parking on vacant, abandoned, or unoccupied lots, bars unlicensed or non-code-compliant vehicles under Ohio R.C. Chapter 4513 from sitting anywhere in a zoning district unless garaged, and limits residential parking to vehicles owned by the resident, a family member, or a guest actually using the property. Together these provisions push everyday vehicle storage off bare lawns and dirt strips and onto an approved hard surface tied to the home's existing driveway.
