Canton, OH Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Canton Codified Ordinances 351.09 sets the rule for every loading zone posted on a city street: no operator may stop, stand or park longer than is necessary for the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers, and no vehicle other than a commercial vehicle may occupy the space at all. For merchandise and materials, the ordinance goes further and puts a hard ceiling on the stop: no more than thirty minutes in any place marked as a loading zone, regardless of how busy the block is.

The section traces to 1964 Code Section 809.05, so it predates the current traffic code but remains in force unchanged. Enforcement runs through the Canton Police Department and the city's parking enforcement officers, who write citations under the general parking-violation penalty in Section 351.99(c) when a driver overstays or a non-commercial vehicle blocks the space. A related provision, Section 351.10, governs taxicab stands and bus zones the same way: vehicles other than the designated type cannot stand there, and buses get the same 'no longer than necessary' loading standard.

Downtown businesses relying on delivery trucks should note that the thirty-minute cap applies specifically to merchandise loading zones and is measured from when the vehicle stops, not from when unloading begins, so drivers who idle before starting to unload eat into their own window. Because the ordinance predates parking meters, it applies whether or not the loading zone abuts a metered space, and it is enforced independently of Chapter 353's meter rules.
