Homestead restricts customer and client traffic to home-based businesses to preserve residential neighborhood character. Walk-in retail sales are prohibited. Limited client visits for service-based businesses may be acceptable if they do not impact parking or generate noticeable traffic above normal residential levels.
Homestead's home occupation conditions restrict the amount of customer and client traffic generated by home-based businesses. Retail sales with walk-in customers are prohibited β no merchandise may be sold from the premises to customers who visit in person. Service-based businesses (consulting, tutoring, accounting) may have occasional client meetings, but traffic must not exceed what is normal for a residential property. Deliveries should be limited to standard residential carrier services (UPS, FedEx, USPS) and not commercial freight. The business must not require customers or clients to park on the street in quantities that affect neighbors. If Code Compliance determines that a home business is generating excessive traffic, the business may receive a cease-and-desist order or conditions requiring reduced client visits. Online businesses with shipping operations are generally acceptable as long as shipping volume remains at residential levels.
Excessive customer traffic may result in home occupation revocation and fines of $100 to $500. Retail operations in residential zones face cease-and-desist orders. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 224-4800.
