Kalamazoo City Code § 50-4.5D(5) lists home occupations, including in-home day-care, as accessory uses to a residential dwelling. The operator must be a full-time resident of the unit, and no more than two nonresident employees may be on the premises at one time. Customers may visit only between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and no more than two clients at a time are allowed except for classes such as art, music, cooking or fitness, which may host up to four. Section 50-4.5D(5)(k) sets the day-care thresholds directly: a family day-care serves up to six participants and needs only an active state license to operate; a group day-care, serving seven to 12 participants, requires that license plus a special use permit reviewed by the Planning Commission.

Outdoor play area standards for larger, nonresidential day-care centers are cross-referenced to § 50-4.4C(3), which requires 100 square feet of enclosed play area per child at maximum licensed attendance. Community Planning and Economic Development administers zoning compliance for home occupations, and no exterior building changes or visible signs of the business beyond a one-square-foot nameplate are permitted.
