Chino Hills prohibits any visible signage for home occupations. Performance standard 7 of the Home Occupation Permit states there shall be no signs, banners, or flags visible from outside the dwelling, and no advertisement may publish the property address. A small business name/logo is allowed only on one permitted work vehicle.
Signage for home occupations in Chino Hills is essentially banned at the residence. The City's Home Occupation Permit performance standards (Section 16.56.020) provide that 'there shall be no signs, banners, or flags displayed which would be visible from outside the dwelling unit.' A related standard adds that 'no advertisement shall be placed in any media containing the address of the property,' keeping the home address off published advertising. The residence also 'shall not be used as a retail storefront' - potential customers may not visit to browse merchandise, although occasional visits to complete paperwork, tender payment, or pick up previously ordered products are allowed. The only permitted exterior identification is on a work vehicle: 'only one vehicle associated with the home occupation no larger than 20 feet in length, 8 feet in height or 90 inches in width may be stored at the home and must be fully parked either in the garage or driveway.' That vehicle 'may display the name and logo of the HOP business on the two side panels of the vehicle provided the display is no larger than 18 inches in width and 12 inches in height per side.' These rules keep the residential appearance of the neighborhood intact, consistent with the requirement that the home occupation not detract from the residential character of the area.
Posting any exterior sign, banner, or flag visible from outside the home, advertising the property address, operating as a storefront, or exceeding the 18-by-12-inch vehicle-panel limit violates the performance standards and can lead to permit suspension or revocation.
