Greenwood, IN Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sec. 10-03-12.A.10 of Greenwood's Unified Development Ordinance is unqualified: no sign shall be permitted on the outside of the structure or on the property which draws attention to the home occupation. Unlike the commercial sign standards in Sec. 10-03-08, which allow ground signs, wall signs, window signs and other categories with specific size and height limits depending on zoning district, a home occupation gets none of those allowances at all, not even a small nameplate or window sign. The rule works alongside two neighboring standards in the same section: A.3 bars altering the external appearance of the structure to accommodate the business, and A.4 prohibits any display of products visible from outside the dwelling.

Read together, these three provisions mean a Greenwood home business must be invisible from the street, curb and sidewalk: no sign, no altered facade, and no outdoor product display can signal that a business operates there. The no-sign rule applies no matter how the home occupation is otherwise compliant on floor area, employee count or vehicle limits; a lawful home bakery or tutoring service that puts up even a small yard sign is out of compliance with this subsection specifically, independent of whether the rest of its operation follows every other home occupation standard in the section.
