Hawthorne, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

The City of Hawthorne takes a strict, no-exceptions approach to advertising at a home occupation. Among the Statement of Conditions that every home occupation permittee must accept under Chapter 17.72, the City provides that no signs, advertising devices, merchandise, or articles shall be displayed for advertising purposes. This means a home-based business in Hawthorne may not post a yard sign, window sign, or any other on-site advertising device, and may not display merchandise to draw attention to the business. The rule flows directly from the chapter's purpose of preserving residential character: a passerby should not be able to tell from the street that a business operates inside the home. The condition works together with the related limits that no customers may come to the residence (with narrow exceptions for one-on-one music or arts instruction and academic tutoring) and that the business may not increase vehicular or pedestrian traffic beyond a normal residence. Because Hawthorne bans all home-occupation signage, it is stricter than cities that allow a small non-illuminated nameplate.
