No external signage of any kind is permitted for home-based businesses in Miami Beach. Home occupations must not have any visible external evidence of the business operation, including signs, displays, window lettering, or advertising visible from outside the residence. The city's sign code under Chapter 138 reinforces this prohibition.
Miami Beach strictly prohibits any external signage for home-based businesses under both the home occupation regulations (Resiliency Code Section 7.5.5.6) and the city's comprehensive sign code (Chapter 138). No signs, banners, flags, window lettering, displays, or other advertising may be placed on or visible from the exterior of the residence or property. This includes temporary signs, vehicle-mounted signs parked at the residence for advertising purposes, and any form of illuminated signage. The intent is to maintain the residential character of neighborhoods and ensure home occupations are invisible from the street. Chapter 138 of the Land Development Regulations governs all signage in Miami Beach and requires permits for commercial signs, none of which may be issued for home occupation locations in residential zones. Digital or electronic signs are also prohibited in residential areas.
Displaying business signage at a home occupation results in Code Compliance citations and potential revocation of the Certificate of Use. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 604-2489.
