North Miami prohibits exterior signage for home-based businesses operating under home occupation provisions. Home occupations must not alter the residential character of the dwelling or neighborhood. Commercial signage in residential zones is regulated under Chapter 29 (Land Development Regulations), and unauthorized signs are subject to Code Compliance enforcement.
Under Chapter 29 of the North Miami Code, home occupations in residential districts may not display any exterior signage advertising the business. The fundamental requirement of a home occupation is that it must be incidental to and not change the residential character of the dwelling. Any exterior advertising, including banners, A-frame signs, window signs visible from outside, or illuminated signs, would violate this requirement. Commercial signage in residential zones is strictly regulated and generally prohibited. Signs placed in the public right-of-way (including swales, sidewalks, and utility poles) without authorization are considered illegal and subject to removal by the city. The sign regulations in Chapter 29 also govern temporary signs, political signs, and real estate signs with specific size, placement, and duration requirements.
Unauthorized business signage in residential areas may result in a Notice of Violation, mandatory removal, and fines. Illegal signs in the right-of-way are subject to immediate removal by the city. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 895-9825.
