New Rochelle, NY Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

New Rochelle treats home business signage differently depending on which home-based use is involved. For a customary home occupation under § 331-45B(5), the code bars "exterior alterations or improvements which change the character or appearance of the dwelling" as well as "external announcement signs," with one narrow exception: "Where otherwise required by law, an external announcement sign may be erected but shall not exceed the minimum requirements of such law." In practice this means most home occupations, such as a home-based crafts or consulting business, cannot post advertising signage at all.

A home professional office, covering physicians, dentists, psychiatrists, lawyers, engineers, architects, nurses, teachers, accountants, and similar professions under § 331-45C, gets a narrower but explicit allowance. Subsection (5) states there "shall be no outside evidence of the home professional office" beyond what Subsection (6) permits, and Subsection (6) then grants exactly "one sign, subject to the requirements of the City's Sign Ordinance." That cross-references Chapter 270, Signs, so the size, illumination, and placement of the single allowed sign must independently satisfy the citywide sign code, not just the zoning chapter's home-office rule.
