Under Renton Municipal Code 4-9-090 (Home Occupations) and RMC 4-4-100 (Sign Regulations), home-based businesses in residential zones face strict limits on exterior signage to preserve neighborhood character. As a general rule, no exterior signs advertising a home occupation are permitted. An exception is allowed for a single non-illuminated nameplate sign up to 2 square feet in area, mounted flat against the dwelling, identifying only the resident or professional (such as Jane Smith, Attorney) — not the business name or services. Window signs visible from the street are treated the same as exterior signs and are generally prohibited for home occupations. No A-frame, sandwich board, yard, banner, feather, or off-site signs are allowed.
