Rocklin Municipal Code Chapter 17.68 prohibits all signage advertising a home business — on or off the premises — with one narrow exception: a single building-mounted, non-illuminated identification sign no larger than 2 inches by 10 inches. No yard signs, A-frames, window signs, vehicle-mounted advertising parked at the residence, or off-premises signs are permitted. Title 16 of the RMC (Signs) separately regulates signage in commercial zones but the home business rule in Title 17 controls residential use.
The 2-inch by 10-inch maximum size (20 square inches total) is among the most restrictive home occupation signage rules in the Sacramento metro and effectively prohibits any practical street-visible identification. Internally illuminated, electronic, neon, or backlit signs are not permitted in any size. The intent of Chapter 17.68 is to preserve the residential character of neighborhoods, so the sign rule pairs with the prohibition on customer-attracting features such as on-site retail displays and outdoor storage.
Posting a prohibited sign for a home business is a violation of RMC §17.68 and is enforced via administrative citation by Rocklin Code Enforcement. Repeated violations can result in revocation of the Home Business Permit. Off-premises signs (such as A-frame signs placed at intersections) are also subject to removal under Title 16 sign rules.
