Sanford, FL Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sanford's Land Development Regulations do not set a maximum sign area for home occupations; instead, Section 3.0 of Schedule E prohibits any outward sign of the business at all. Subsection A bars displaying goods, commodities or merchandise visible from the street, and Subsection B goes further, barring any change in the outside appearance of the building or premises, or any other visible evidence that a home occupation is being conducted, which forecloses an identification sign, awning lettering or window advertising that would tell a passerby a business operates at the address.

That stands in contrast to the sign standards Schedule K sets for commercial properties, which regulate size and placement rather than banning visible signage outright. The no-evidence standard applies alongside the section's other limits: the floor-area cap of 25 percent of the first floor or 500 square feet under Subsection D, the family-only labor rule under Subsection F, and the prohibition on off-premises noise, vibration, glare, fumes, odors or electrical interference under Subsection G. An applicant must disclose the nature of the home occupation on the permit application reviewed by the administrative official under Subsection H, and any resident can ask the city commission for a hearing to revoke a permit for a home occupation that violates Section 3.0, including one that posts a sign or otherwise advertises visibly from the property.
