Mountain View allows Home Occupations in residential zones subject to standards that keep the business clearly secondary to the dwelling and compatible with neighbors.
Mountain View City Code authorizes Home Occupations in all residential zoning districts so long as they are clearly incidental to the use of the dwelling. The business must be conducted wholly inside the residence or an allowed accessory structure; must not occupy more than a limited share of the floor area, generally 25 percent; must not alter the residential appearance of the dwelling or lot; must not generate noise, vibration, odor, dust, glare, or electrical interference detectable at the property line; and cannot employ more than one non-resident on site. A business license is required, and the applicant must sign a Home Occupation Permit acknowledgement. Uses generating significant client traffic, heavy equipment storage, auto repair, medical or dental practice, and retail sales beyond incidental are typically not allowed as Home Occupations.
