Yuma, AZ Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

18(A) treats backyard composting as an accessory use tied to a community garden and sets six performance standards: no container within five feet of a rear or side property line or inside the front yard setback; no container within 20 feet of any residential dwelling other than the one on the same property; design that prevents seepage from reaching streets, storm sewers, drainage ditches, stormwater basins or neighboring properties; construction from wood, wire mesh, concrete block or a combination, or a commercially available compost bin; a five-foot maximum height; and a ban within the Airport Overlay District's APZ-1, APZ-2 and Clear Zone areas or the Runway Approach Departure Safety Area/Airport Industrial Overlay.

Larger composting operations get a separate, stricter track: subsection (B) allows "large composting sites" only as a conditional use in Agricultural, Light Industrial or Heavy Industrial zones, on three or more contiguous acres, ten feet from any side or rear line, and 1,000 feet from any residentially zoned or used property. 02(G): it must sit on five or more contiguous acres, the operator must notify the Yuma Fire Department in writing of the site location, and it cannot operate within 1,320 feet of an existing residential use unless conducted on farmland or leased farmland.

Subsection (D) lets the City suspend or terminate any composting site, backyard or large, if it creates malodorous conditions, a nuisance, or a fire or health hazard.
